Separate aviation myths from reality. Understand what causes flight turbulence and why it's a normal part of air travel for a more confident journey.

Most people who fly have experienced turbulence. For some, it produces mild anxiety, while for others, it causes genuine fear. The sensation of the plane shaking can make even seasoned travelers uneasy. However, understanding the science behind this common occurrence can help demystify the experience.

Pilots train extensively to manage these conditions, and airplanes themselves possess remarkable structural integrity. Exploring the impact of turbulence helps debunk common myths and clarify facts, giving passengers a clearer perspective on bumpy flights.

What Causes Turbulence?

Several factors contribute to turbulent air. Each has a distinct origin, but all result in the same bumpy ride for passengers. Understanding these sources can help explain why turbulence occurs on some flights and not others.

Types of Turbulence

Thermal Turbulence: This happens when the sun heats the Earth’s surface unevenly. The warm air rises and mixes with the cooler air above, creating vertical currents that aircraft fly through.

Mechanical Turbulence: Obstructions like mountains, tall buildings, or irregular terrain disrupt smooth airflow. As air moves over these objects, it creates eddies and waves, much like water flowing over rocks in a stream.

Clear-Air Turbulence (CAT): Often occurring at high altitudes where the sky appears clear, CAT forms at the boundary between air masses moving at different speeds. This friction between air layers creates instability.

Debunking Common Flight Myths

Misinformation about aviation safety often spreads, leading to unnecessary worry. Addressing these flight myths with facts provides a more accurate picture of air travel.

Turbulence Is Dangerous

This remains one of the most persistent myths. While uncomfortable, turbulence poses little threat to an airplane’s structural integrity. Aircraft undergo rigorous testing and possess the flexibility to withstand forces far greater than those encountered during typical flights. Pilots also slow the plane to a specific speed to move smoothly through rough air.

Pilots Are Surprised by It

Advanced weather-forecasting technology enables pilots and air traffic controllers to predict and avoid most areas of significant turbulence. The role of weather in flight training is a fundamental part of a pilot’s education, preparing them to anticipate and navigate these conditions safely. However, Clear-Air Turbulence can sometimes appear without warning, though pilots remain prepared to handle it.

The Reality of Aviation Safety

Flying remains one of the safest modes of travel. The aviation industry upholds strict, continuously improving safety protocols. Pilots receive extensive training, and modern aircraft feature redundant systems for almost any scenario. While turbulence can feel alarming, understanding its impact and dispelling myths confirms the aircraft remains under control.

A Smoother Perspective on Flying

Understanding the causes of turbulence and the safety measures in place can help passengers feel more at ease during a bumpy flight. The shaking and jostling are standard parts of flying, not indicators of a problem. The aircraft performs precisely as it should, and the flight crew has the expertise to navigate the skies safely. The next time your flight encounters rough air, you can feel more confident knowing the facts.

Prepare for your winter road trip with these essential tips. Stay safe on icy and snowy roads with vehicle checks, emergency kits, and smart planning.

The post How to Properly Prepare for a Winter Road Trip appeared first on Weekly Living.

Winter road trips offer stunning snowy landscapes and memorable adventures, but they also come with unique challenges. Cold temperatures, icy roads, and unpredictable weather can turn a pleasant journey into a stressful experience if you’re not properly prepared. Understanding how to properly prepare for a winter road trip ensures you stay safe, comfortable, and ready to handle whatever Mother Nature throws your way.

Check Your Vehicle

Before hitting the road, give your car a thorough inspection. Cold weather can be tough on vehicles, so start by checking your battery, as frigid temperatures can drain its power quickly. Examine your tires to ensure they have adequate tread depth and proper inflation. Consider switching to winter tires if you’ll be driving through heavy snow or ice regularly. Don’t forget to top off your windshield washer fluid with a winter formula that won’t freeze and replace worn wiper blades for maximum visibility. Check your antifreeze levels to prevent engine damage and switch to synthetic engine oil in winter for better cold-weather performance and engine protection.

Pack an Emergency Kit

An emergency kit can be a lifesaver during winter travel. Include items like blankets, extra warm clothing, non-perishable snacks, bottled water, a flashlight with extra batteries, and a first-aid kit. Add a snow shovel, ice scraper, jumper cables, and sand or cat litter to create traction if your tires get stuck. A portable phone charger ensures you can call for help even if your battery dies.

Plan Your Route

Route planning becomes critical during winter months. Check weather forecasts along your entire journey and identify alternative routes in case your primary path becomes impassable. Look for rest stops and gas stations along the way, as they may be fewer and farther between in winter conditions. Share your itinerary with someone who isn’t traveling with you so they know your expected arrival time and can alert authorities if necessary.

Master Winter Driving Techniques

Winter driving requires a different approach than fair-weather travel. Reduce your speed and increase following distance to account for longer stopping times on slippery surfaces. Avoid sudden movements with the steering wheel, brakes, or accelerator. If you start to skid, steer in the direction you want to go and avoid slamming on the brakes. Practice these techniques in an empty parking lot before your trip if you’re not experienced with winter driving.

Stay Informed

Keep yourself updated throughout your journey. Monitor weather forecasts and road condition reports regularly using apps or local radio stations. Many transportation departments offer real-time information about road closures, accidents, and weather-related hazards. Being flexible with your plans allows you to adjust if conditions deteriorate unexpectedly.

Understanding how to properly prepare for a winter road trip transforms a potentially dangerous journey into a safe and enjoyable experience. Take the time to prepare your vehicle, pack essential supplies, and equip yourself with the knowledge to handle winter conditions confidently. Your future self will thank you when you arrive at your destination safely and ready to enjoy your winter adventure.

Finding the perfect spot for your next trip takes time and careful consideration. If you love outdoor activities and exploring beautiful landscapes, Idaho could be the ideal option. This beautiful state offers stunning views and a plethora of exciting outdoor activities. Whether you’re planning a solo trip, a romantic getaway, or a family vacation, Idaho has something for everyone. Delve into the top reasons why you should plan your next vacation in Idaho.

There Are Hiking Trails for All Skill Levels

Hiking is a fun way to immerse yourself in nature as you walk through beautiful landscapes and breathe fresh air. As you search for hiking trails, select a route that aligns with your skill level, as some may be a bit challenging for beginners.

Some of the best trails in Idaho include:

Goat Lake: A challenging 10- to 12-mile hike that takes you through stunning mountain views and a peaceful alpine lake.

Sawtooth Lake: A moderate 5-mile hike that rewards you with breathtaking views of the Sawtooth Mountains and serene lake

Rainbow Lakes: An easy 3-mile hike that takes you past three lakes with crystal clear waters and beautiful wildflowers.

Consider what you want to see to narrow your options for the perfect hiking trail. For example, Shoshone Falls could be a good choice if you want to take pictures of waterfalls.

You Can Go Snowmobiling and ATV Riding

Idaho can feel like an outdoor playground for anyone who loves combining thrill with embracing nature. During the winter, the state is a prime spot for snowmobiling, offering countless miles of pristine trails that take you through snowy forests and valleys. Consider checking out some of the best snowmobiling trails in Idaho Falls to ensure you ride through the most beautiful areas.

If you go to Idaho in the warmer months, you can ride ATVs for an exhilarating day of exploring mountains, rivers, and canyons. While some ATVs are single-seaters, others allow more than one person to ride at a time.

To ensure everyone’s safety, riding these vehicles or snowmobiles requires a valid driver’s license.

You Can Enjoy White Water Rafting

Looking for a way to take your adventure to the water? White water rafting is another popular activity in Idaho, especially on the Salmon River—also known as the “River of No Return.” Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rafter, there are plenty of options for every level.

White water rafting is an empowering experience that physically challenges your body. You and your group will navigate through foaming rapids and paddle past scenic canyons as you take on the exhilarating adventure. It’s an adrenaline rush that allows you to witness some of Idaho’s most beautiful landscapes from a unique perspective.

You Can Plan a Camping Adventure

The final reason to plan your next vacation in Idaho is to sleep under the stars. Camping allows you to fully immerse yourself in nature and disconnect from everyday life. Plus, you can combine this with other activities, such as hiking or whitewater rafting, for a truly unforgettable experience.

Whether you prefer camping in the mountains, near a lake, or in the desert, Idaho offers a variety of options for all types of campers. Regardless of what you decide to do, spending a night outdoors is essential to experiencing Idaho’s natural beauty.

Planning a trip for an extended period can feel both exciting and daunting. Forgetting important items or making last-minute arrangements can quickly turn your adventure into a logistical nightmare. To ensure you don’t miss anything important, we’ll explore the most essential things to remember when taking a long trip. Read on to make your journeys seamless, enjoyable, and well-organized.

1. Plan Ahead and Stay Organized

Long trips require far more planning than quick getaways. Preparing in advance can help you avoid unnecessary stress, unexpected hurdles, or financial surprises.

Securing your accommodations and transportation ahead of time often provides you with better deals and more choices. You should also jot down major travel dates, activities, and contact information for bookings or tours. This will make it easier to estimate how much your trip will cost before departing.

2. Pack Strategically

While packing might seem like a straightforward task, doing it wrong can hinder your experience significantly. Overpacking, underpacking, or forgetting essentials are all rookie mistakes to avoid.

Roll your clothes instead of folding them to maximize space and minimize wrinkles. Packing cubes are another brilliant addition for improved organization. For flights or long commutes, throw in sleep masks, earplugs, and snacks to keep fatigue and hunger at bay.

3. Power Your Gadgets Efficiently

Traveling with multiple gadgets requires careful planning to keep them powered throughout your journey. It’s important to have a reliable power supply, but there are some things to know about traveling with lithium-ion batteries for your safety and peace of mind.

Pack a universal adapter if you’re traveling internationally, as plug types vary between countries. You might also consider investing in a high-capacity power bank to charge devices on the go, especially during long flights or layovers.

4. Consider Your Health and Safety

Your health and safety should be a priority, whether you’re traveling domestically or abroad. Minor injuries or unexpected illnesses can happen at any time. Carry essentials like adhesive bandages, pain relievers, antihistamines, and cold medicine, just in case.

Travel insurance might seem like an unnecessary cost, but it can save you thousands in medical bills or trip cancellations. If you’re traveling internationally, research whether vaccinations are needed for the destination. Additionally, note down emergency contact numbers or local hospitals at your destination.

5. Make the Most of Your Destination

A long trip is a precious opportunity to immerse yourself in new environments. Before you set off, invest time in understanding the culture of your destination. Knowing a few common phrases in the local language or respecting cultural customs can leave a positive impression.

Push boundaries beyond tourist attractions. Participate in local events, eat regional delicacies, and mingle with locals. While it’s tempting to fit everything into your itinerary, doing so can lead to burnout if you aren’t careful. Allow time to relax, explore unplanned spots, or simply watch the world go by at a local café.

Take Your Travel Adventure to the Next Level

A well-prepared traveler is a happy traveler. No matter where you’re going, there are key items that you’ll need to bring with you for maximum enjoyment. With these essential things to remember when taking a long trip, you’ll create long-lasting memories without all the hassle.

Many people may not consider Texas a vacation destination, but Austin is one of the best cities to visit as a tourist in the country. If you’re visiting this great city in the Lone Star State soon but aren’t sure what to do when you get there, check out our list of fun things to do when you visit Austin, TX, below.

Take a Guided Horseback Trail Ride

When in Texas, why not do what the cowboys do? If you love horseback riding, or have never done it before and want to experience it for the first time, Austin is a great place to try it.

Many horseback guides around the city will take you on beautiful, guided tours through Austin’s many nature trails and scenic vistas. Don’t forget to pack your cowboy hat and your boots!

Taste Austin’s Famous Cuisine

A trip to Austin, one of the best food cities in America, is incomplete without sampling some of its incredible restaurants, BBQ joints, and food trucks. The great thing about Austin is there’s something for everyone thanks to its diverse cuisine offerings.

Austinites will tell you their city is the best place in Texas for authentic Tex-Mex tacos and barbecue, so you can’t leave without sampling. If you want to try a bit of everything, head down to The Picnic, where you’ll find food trucks of every variety.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, the importance of quality time with family cannot be overstated. Family-friendly travel offers a perfect opportunity to escape the routine, strengthen bonds, and create enduring memories together. From theme parks to nature retreats, family-friendly destinations cater to a variety of interests, ensuring that every member, young and old, can find joy in the journey.

The Value of Family Time Away

Family vacations provide a precious opportunity to disconnect from the stresses of work and school, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared experiences. These moments away from the familiar surroundings create a canvas for laughter, exploration, and the building of traditions that last a lifetime.

Choosing the Right Destination

The key to a successful family-friendly trip lies in selecting a destination that caters to the interests and needs of everyone in the family. Considerations such as the age of the children, preferred activities, and the overall travel experience play a crucial role in choosing the perfect destination. Theme parks, beach resorts, and national parks are popular choices, each offering a unique set of experiences.

Theme Parks: Where Magic Happens for All Ages

For families with children, the enchanting world of theme parks is a natural magnet. Whether it’s the magical kingdoms of Disney, the thrilling rides at Universal Studios, or the educational wonders of Epcot, theme parks offer a blend of entertainment that transcends age barriers. The joy on a child’s face as they meet their favorite characters or conquer a roller coaster creates memories that linger long after the trip ends.

Beach Resorts: Sun, Sand, and Shared Delight

Beach destinations provide a serene backdrop for family bonding. Building sandcastles, splashing in the waves, and enjoying seaside activities create a relaxed environment for both parents and children. Resorts often offer kid-friendly amenities and programs, allowing parents some well-deserved downtime while the little ones engage in supervised activities.

National Parks: Nature’s Classroom for All Ages

For families seeking an immersive and educational experience, national parks are a treasure trove. Hiking trails, wildlife sightings, and the sheer majesty of nature offer opportunities for exploration and discovery. National parks instill a sense of appreciation for the environment and provide a backdrop for family discussions on conservation and the beauty of the natural world.

Tips for Family-Friendly Travel

Plan Ahead: Anticipate the needs of each family member and plan activities that cater to different interests and energy levels.

Pack Wisely: Ensure you have essentials for each family member, from snacks and entertainment for the kids to necessary medications and comfort items.

Flexibility is Key: While having a plan is essential, be open to spontaneity and unexpected detours. Some of the best memories are often made in the unplanned moments.

Capture the Moments: Bring along a camera or use your smartphone to capture candid moments and create a visual diary of your family adventure.

Encourage Participation: Involve everyone in the decision-making process, allowing each family member to contribute ideas and preferences for the trip.

Family-friendly travel is not just about reaching a destination; it’s about the journey and the shared moments that create a tapestry of memories. Whether exploring the magic of theme parks, relaxing on sandy shores, or immersing yourselves in the wonders of nature, family travel provides a canvas for creating lasting connections and cherished experiences. These moments spent together become the threads that weave a family’s unique story.

Flight attendants are pros at packing, because they are constantly packing and unpacking. Let’s find out what they can teach us about packing that we can use in our next trip to the other side of the world or even just on our next road trip. This article provides 50 tips from flight-attendants that not only keep their packing light, but also has some amazing hacks for getting the most out of your travel.

Video Overview

Pack your Shoes:

This may seem a little silly when first reading it. When you HAVE to bring multiple pairs of shoes on your trip pack them full. Roll your socks, bras, underwear, and any other small items into your shoes. This will save on space, which is so precious as airlines raise prices and baggage limits across the board. Read more on space savers in the previously published article: How to Pack your Carry-on like a Pro

Block pack your Clothes:

Are you someone whose clothes are literally popping out of your tightly packed suitcase. Try something different. Fold your clothes into a large block all together. This will keep your clothes from bursting out of your suitcase.

Jewelry Packing:

If you haven’t already packed your jewelry, find a pill case and pack it full of jewelry. Earrings, rings, and even necklaces can usually fit into one little space of your pill case. If you are concerned about your necklaces getting tangled, try pulling a necklace through a straw and re-clasping it. It will keep it from getting tangled.

Don’t Overpack:

Only pack what you need. Base your clothing, shoes, etc off of your itinerary. If you aren’t going to a formal event, don’t take formal clothing. If you aren’t going hiking, don’t take hiking gear or shoes.

Put a Shower Cap over your Shoes:

It may seem silly, but covering your shoes, will protect your cloths from the dirt and mud that may have accumulated over time on the bottom of your shoes.

Put Rubber Bands around Your Books:

When packing your books for the road or your flight, put a rubberband around the books to help them keep their shape and not get torn or bent in your luggage.

Take along Oven Mitts for your Heat Products:

It may seem a little silly, but your hair straighteners, curlers and other heated products need a space in your suitcase, and oven mitts allow you to pack them away safely and you can use those same mitts to set them on as they heat up when you arrive.

Wear Bulky or Big Items:

It may be more complicated to get through security with big bulky jackets, or hiking boots, but if you are packing light, it is important to keep your biggest and bulkiest items outside of your suitcase.

Always Bring a Sarong:

It may seem silly if you aren’t going somewhere tropical or have no plans for a poolside getaway; however, a sarong will come in handy in a cold airplane, airport, or as a cover if you happen to go to a church or temple at your destination.

Don’t Bring Soap:

It may seem like an obvious idea, but unless you are camping you don’t need it. Hotels, hostels and most vacation homes will have soap, shampoo and all the essentials necessary for cleansing.

Keep Like Items Together:

Keep liquids together in a plastic storage bag. If you are taking laptops, phones, camera chargers, etc. also keep those cords separate from the rest of your items. We suggest packing them in a small bag to keep them safe from breakage or strippage.

Also, don’t forget your medications. Keep them in a baggie or pill case.

Pack Lotions & Makeup into Contact Cases:

You can keep your foundation, touch-up and lotion other creamy items in contact cases. The contact cases are tiny, and can provide the perfect amount of makeup for a short trip. Take a few containers if required for your needs.

Don’t Pack what you can Affordably Puchase Locally:

No matter where you travel, don’t bring things that can be purchased at an affordable price locally. It may add some adventure to your trip if you are out seeking items that you didn’t bring along. For instance, don’t bring sunscreen if you are going to Florida, you can definitely buy it there. Don’t bring your sun hat if you are visiting Hawaii. It will allow you to bring home a souvenir and keep your packing lighter.

Pack a Mesh Bag for Laundry:

Keeping a mesh bag in your suitcase is so easy. It is super light to travel with, and allows you to keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean when you arrive at your destination.

Matching Luggage Tags assist when Traveling with a Group:

When traveling with your family or even a group of friends, a good idea is to purchase matching luggage tags so that your luggage can be easily identified from other suitcases coming around the turnstile.

Bring your Own Pillowcase:

Sleeping in someone else’s home may not be as much of an issue, but when traveling to hostels, hotels, or vacation homes you always want to be sure to bring your own pillowcase. This not only give you a taste of home, but allows you to ensure you are sleeping on a clean surface.

Some of these ideas may not be novel to you, but all of these ideas can keep your packing light and fresh when heading to your next destination.

For a person that opens their wardrobe and begins packing for a holiday an hour before they are due to leave home, there is a large chance that they will over pack on some items and completely forget other important objects they would rather not do without. These problems can be eliminated by forming a master packing list to use and update regularly.

A packing list for people that holiday in the summer will be different for those that travel across the winter and if you’re the type that takes regular weekend breaks, you may need a separate packing list for each type of holiday.

Creating your packing list

Fortunately, many people have created holiday packing lists and make them available across the Internet and ready for download. These lists might not be perfect for you, but they may form a solid foundation for many of the items that you need to consider and then it will just be up to you to update the list to suit your personal circumstances.

It is better to create a master packing list and then decide which items you are not going to take with you, when you are restricted by suitcase size and weight if you are travelling by airline.

The provision of an up-to-date packing list will reduce your stress when you need to travel urgently, particularly if this is related to having to visit family or friends who are ill.

Your list can also be used as a repacking facility when your holiday comes to an end. If you’ve lost anything you will quickly know and your list will help prevent you from leaving anything behind. If your luggage is stolen or lost, your packing list will help you complete your travel insurance claim.

Go day by day

Where you consider each part of everyday while you are away, you can carefully assess which clothes and other items you will need at each single stage. You will quickly find out if some items can be used on numerous occasions by picking clothes that coordinate together you will be able to reduce your packing list to the smallest selection of requirements, but to include everything you need.

Once your lists are complete, you may need to consider local traditions and cultures which may affect how you are dressed for public events.

For all of your jewellery and gadgets, you will have to decide if you really need to take the items with you because when you are travelling to different areas, it is easy for your awareness to be reduced and you may attract thieves and burglars.

Travel kits provide an extremely good way of combining all of your toiletries into a waterproof container that won’t empty out onto your clothing, especially if you don’t fill bottles to the brim because aeroplane pressure can force the contents to explode.

Expert packers will photocopy maps and pages from guidebooks rather than taking complete books, but if all your books can be downloaded to a tablet computer, you could leave your laptop and books at home.

Once all of your packing lists are complete, they will greatly reduce the stress of having to reconsider what to take for every occasion, but it is better to update the list as your needs and necessities change over the years and never forget your Swiss Army knife, which for its small size, can perform a multitude of tasks. However, don’t try taking it on an airplane with you; it won’t be allowed.

She enjoys blogging, TV, pop culture and tweeting @ericajmoss.

They say that it’s about the journey, not the destination, and that’s mostly true — except when it comes to travel headaches. Sometimes you just can’t wait to get to you destination and have a little less “journey” to deal with.

But travel doesn’t have to be a headache. There are a few simple tricks you can use to maximize your travel efficiency, thereby decreasing stress and making the journey a little more enjoyable. Here are a few tips:

Pack Efficiently

It can be easy to get into the habit of just jamming fistfuls of clothing into a duffel bag or backpack if you’re taking a short trip, but spending a few extra minutes to flatten, fold and tightly pack things can make your journey much more pleasant. If you’re flying, for example, and you have a big, lumpy bag, you can encounter boarding delays as you’re trying to jam it into a tiny overhead bin. You can avoid having the annoyance just by making sure your luggage is packed neatly and tightly. When you arrive, it’s easier to unpack as well. Bonus!

Preload Your Devices with Destination Information

This is especially important for foreign travelers: You’re not guaranteed an Internet connection or wi-fi when you get to your destination country, so make sure you have some basic informational things preloaded onto your smartphone or tablet. Popular mapping applications allow you to store some things locally, meaning you’ll be able to get a map even while you’re offline. Make sure you have basic information saved as easily-accessible text documents; the name (and pronunciation) of your hotel can go a long way. Just knowing how to say the name of your hotel in the local language could be the difference between a simple journey from the airport and an expensive nightmare.

ABC: Always Be Charging

Make sure to bring your chargers! You can also consolidate them with several aftermarket universal chargers that have different adapters to fit a variety of devices. Having an external battery pack can be a huge lifesaver as well, and they’re not too expensive.

Also: See that spare outlet in the airport terminal? Plug in for five minutes. Plug in to the hotel lobby. Don’t be afraid to plug in while you’re at a cafe or restaurant. Additionally, make sure you have a proper adapter for the local electrical outlets.

Footwear

Unless you’re planning on having a club night at your destination, it’s alright to leave the five-inch heels home. You’ll want to make sure you have footwear that is comfortable. Nobody wants to be hauling through an airport or boarding a train with luggage wearing uncomfortable shoes. Always assume you will be walking more than you might think, and don’t bring any shoes that even remotely have the chance of hurting your feet. You can’t predict what kind of situations or weather you might encounter, and shoes can make a big difference to your peace of mind.

Remember the TSA

If you’re flying, you do not want to be one of the hapless, clueless folks in line who have to keep being told by TSA agents what to do and what not to do. Make sure you understand the rules before you get onto the security line. Take your belt, shoes and jacket off. Make sure nothing is in your pockets, not even change or papers. Take your laptop out of the bag — and make sure it’s easy to remove and replace before you even get to the airport! With proper preparation, you can breeze through security even while other people are struggling with their bags or emptying their pockets. You’ll look like a pro.

—

Travel does not have to be stressful, and being prepared can go a long way towards making your trip a breeze so that you can enjoy the destination and the journey.

Situated on the southern tip of the island of Lanzarote, the resort of Playa Blanca is ideal for those looking for a quiet and relaxing family holiday on an island which is well served by charter as well as budget airlines to the airport of Arrecife – 21 miles away from this resort. A taxi from the airport should cost around 30 euros, although local buses are also available.

One option for your holiday in the sun is to book an all-inclusive holiday – a form of break which is increasingly becoming the preferred choice for families and couples alike.

When to go

Lanzarote is a year-round island, although spring and autumn are great times to be here, with fewer visitors and lower prices to be had in the hotels. Summer doesn’t get too hot (temperatures range from around 21-29°C all year round) and the weather is still very good in winter (one of its most popular seasons for those looking for winter sun).

What to see and do

One of the pleasantest things to do in Playa Blanca, after breakfast, before dinner or just about any time of the day, is to go for a walk around the 9km sea front which encompasses three different beach areas – Playa Dorada, Playa Blanca and Playa Flamingo. All can be reached easily along one well-made promenade.

There is no shortage of good, clean beaches on the island and Playa Dorada (golden beach) is easily reached from Playa Blanca (white beach); or visit the Marina Rubicon, around 15 minutes walk from town and hosting twice weekly morning markets. It has lots of restaurants and cafes to visit.

Last but certainly not least, the volcanic Timanfaya National Park is only a 20 minute drive away from Playa Blanca, and is a must-see if you’re on the island.

Where to stay

The Hotel Blue Sea Corbeta boasts five swimming pools and plenty of daily activities plus entertainment in the evening, so you don’t need to stray too far if you don’t want to on your all-inclusive deal. Two restaurants and two bars are available for all your food and drink requirements, and your modern room will be situated in one of 90 low rise whitewashed villas scattered around the extensive grounds.

The four star Cay Beach Papagayo is a short shuttle bus ride to Playa Blanca or the Marina and is ideal for a laid-back stay in a hotel with both and adult’s and children’s swimming pool (heated in winter) and is the nearest one to Timanfaya.

Where to eat

If you’d like a change from the hotel food, there are numerous restaurants in Playa Blanca, as well as at the Marina Rubicon. For traditional Spanish cuisine, try the Los Hervideros in town, or for something a little different try some French food at La Petite Marmite in the Marina.

Why an all inclusive in Playa Blanca

Clean, safe beaches for the kids, entertainment at night, in the hotels or outside, and lots of sightseeing to be done on a beautiful volcanic island make this an excellent choice for an all inclusive break – at any time of the year.

Leaving Napa on a sunny and warm Sunday morning meant it was time to put the top down, the shades up and the music low. It was October, mid-harvest, and we had just spent several days drinking good wine with good friends. But when the light came through the windows that morning, we were ready for something different. The stars, properly aligned, provided the setting for the most memorable road trip of our adult lives.

The California Coast

Being east coast dwellers and first time visitors to Napa and the surrounding area, we decided to ask the front desk for recommendations. Upon hearing that we were driving a Mustang convertible and wanting to catch some of the countryside, the front desk clerk smiled and handed us a map to Bodega Bay and Muir Woods. You won’t regret it, she said. And the weather is perfect for it.

Coffee cups and muffins in hand, we put the top down on our incredible ride, programmed the GPS and settled in. Hitting the highway, we headed almost due west straight through to the Sonoma Coast. Who knew California was home to so many sheep farms? We marveled as the terrain subtly changed to steep, dry hillsides. Beyond the peaks, a sense of void lay beyond, the ocean teasing us with promises of around the next bend, through the next hillside.

Mustang Convertible + California Sunshine = Happiness

The Mustang drove beautifully, accelerating with relish, nimbly handling the windy road with ease. We talked about how fun it would be to own one back east, conveniently forgetting about the six months of bad weather we endure every year. We imagined finding Mustang parts and accessories for our four-wheeled baby, attracting the envy of our hard-top-owning friends. And as we parked the beauty at Bodega Bay’s almost-deserted beach and gazed over the ocean to a cloudless horizon, we soon kicked off our shoes and pushed our toes through the golden sand. It was cold and rainy at home.

The Best Oysters Ever

After lunch overlooking the Pacific, we drove south on route one toward San Francisco. After a couple of wrong turns – thanks tons, GPS – we wound our way through Marin County and stumbled upon the finest oysters these shellfish connoisseurs have ever eaten. The perfect blend of casual roadside atmosphere, a sinking sun, Tabasco and beer kept us relaxed and talking quietly. Reluctant to leave, but anxious to see Stinson Beach and Muir Woods before the sky darkened, we cruised onward.

Trees, Hairpin Turns and a Glorious Sunset Over Stinson Beach

Before long the trees became canopies the covered the road with a majesty and dignity unknown in the east. The road made it impossible to drive more than 15 or 20 miles per hour, as it rose and twisted toward the summit of an unnamed hill.

Before us lay the Pacific and an orange sky; it’s centerpiece, the sun. No guard rails, and my hands are sweating on the wheel. I am anxious to watch the sky but can only catch glimpses here and there. But my husband is relaxed, feet up, not thinking about work or even buying CJ Pony Parts Ford Mustang parts and accessories for our fantasy purchase. He smiles quietly and watches the shimmering vista under the protective gaze of the Redwoods.

San Francisco

We get gas and cross the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco. Although we have both heard wonderful things about San Fran, we cannot help but be disappointed following our amazing day (of course, this could also be because we are New Yorkers at heart and cities rarely impress us). Nevertheless, we arrive safely at our hotel and get a drink at the bar. And although we are preparing to head home the following day, we cannot help but feel that we have already found our home. Our car, too.
