Beginners Tips: 5 Ways to Feng Shui Your Home

HouseDeveloped over 3,000 years ago, the art of Feng Shui is all about balancing energy and creating positive energy flow throughout your home, and consequently, your life. If you are constantly tripping over clutter in your hallway, or sifting through piles of paper to find your checkbook, you may be in need of some basic Feng Shui tips that can help simplify your life by helping you have a more positive environment, and therefore, overall outlook.

1. Start with the Front Door

According to the principles of Feng Shui, having a “strong front door” is a key element in creating the positive energy flow in the rest of your home or business. Since the house gets its Chi (energy) through the front door, the more balanced your main entry is, the better energy will flow through it. Ask yourself these questions about your front door and entryway:

–       Is there an unobstructed path from the outside to the inside, or is there something that could be blocking the energy flow?

–       Is your front door functioning well? Does it squeak or is it hard to open?

–       Are there outdated decorations hanging on the door?

If your front door is not functioning as it should, contact a company like Greg Martineau Projects  to help you install a new door and/or windows. Not only will it improve the chi around your home, it will also be more energy efficient.

All of these factors can enhance or impede the energy flowing into your home.

2. Feng Shui Your Living Room

Since this may be the room you and your family spend the most time in, you will want it to be conducive to a good foundation for positive energy to the rest of your home. Make sure you have enough light, good air quality and minimal clutter so everyone feels comfortable spending time in the living room.  An organized space is good for both adults and children.

3. Choosing Colors for Each Space

The principles of Feng Shui rely on colors. Choosing the best colors for each room is an easy way to shift the energy in your home. The colors of Feng Shui correspond to the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood. So, for example, if you are striving to create a passionate, high-energy room, you would choose a color that relates to the element of fire. This could work well for your career efforts as well as passion and inner warmth.

4. Mirrors and Water Features Keep Energy Flowing

Mirrors bring the energy of water into a room. Like a pond, they reflect light and anything else that is projected into them. Mirrors can be used to make a space feel bigger as well as drawing in positive Chi. Like mirrors, water features keep the energy flowing as well, and bring a sense of calm and refreshment to just about any room.

Like colors, different elements represent different types of Feng Shui energy. For instance, flowers, both alive and in art, bring good luck, beauty and grace to your home. Live flowers can also bring healing energy into a space. Butterflies, horses and birds are also very rich with symbolic meaning and energy. Choose symbols that mean the most to you.

Recreating the energy flow in your home can be a bit overwhelming, but maybe that’s just because the existing energy isn’t as positive as it could be. To apply the principles of Feng Shui, start with one room at a time. See how you feel different, inspired or calmer in that new space you’ve created. Then, move on from there creating your own personal sanctuary of positive, flowing energy.
