Staycations are the new ‘two weeks in the sun’ and as a result the great British caravan holiday is all the rage. But in order to get to where you want to have your holiday you need to have a vehicle that is right for your needs.
Of course you will have made sure that you bought a car that was strong enough to pull a caravan, but have you gone for the right one to suit you and your needs outside of caravanning maybe twice in the year?
Here are the best caravanning cars around at the moment split into groups that should help you match more of your life and personality to the car:
For Style
- Mercedes E350 CDi Estate
If you are a style conscious individual that wouldn’t be caught dead in some of the models listed below then you can’t do much better that this Mercedes. It has the poise, elegant comfort and executive look that you expect, but come the holidays you can easily hook on your caravan and hit the road.
Only Negatives: It can be a target for thieves.
For Grunt
- Range Rover Sport TDV6
Have you got a big family with a lot of luggage and a love of the mountains? Do you go off-road a lot? Then you will want a vehicle that can handle all that and then some. The Range Rover is a monster and almost ticks as many style boxes as the Mercedes, but with indeed significantly more grunt.
Only Negatives: It is a bit big for city driving.
For Economy
- Fiat Doblo 2.0 Eleganza
If you’re on a budget but still want to get the best caravan hauler you can, this is probably your best bet. It’s not pretty but will get you and your caravan from A to B to C and back again, and will be perfectly practical the rest of the year too. Plus it can get almost 50 mpg even with the caravan.
Only Negatives: Not that pretty.
For Size
- Skoda Fabia 1.6 TDi CR
If you really don’t like or need a big car the rest of the year and only need to pull the caravan occasionally, this little gem should be your first choice. It has enough torque to yank your home on wheels around; it normally goes for less than £15,000 new and can be your cute little run about the rest of the year.
Only Negatives: It’s a Skoda.
Andy Pinder is a car salesman. When asked ‘how much is my car worth’ he will normally ask them to ‘buy my car’ to show them how they should go about haggling.
