Keeping Students Motivated During Distance Learning

Distance Learning

E-Learning or distance learning has been an adjustment for families across the nation. Learning from the comfort of your home can be a very difficult thing, even if you are following all the tips and directions you can find. While those at-home tips help with the educational aspect, they don’t help with the overall morale and motivation that goes hand-in-hand with the learning process. Read below for a few pointers on keeping students motivated during distance learning.

Video Overview

Distance Learning: Don’t Allow Isolation – Build a Sense of Community

The best part of the classroom is interacting with others and building friendships. With distance learning, this is hard to come by. Feeling isolated can be extremely detrimental and will not provide a good solid foundation for at-home learning. Don’t let this turn into a loss of motivation; instead, be proactive. There are countless virtual activities and connections that you can make with distance learning. You can coordinate online group activities, continue with group projects and feedback, and allow for students to have one-on-one time with their friends.

Provide Positives and Meaningful Feedback

Meaningful feedback is a necessity. Teachers incorporate this into their classrooms more than you even know. Without being able to be in the classroom, many teachers don’t have the luxury of incorporating this one-on-one motivational feedback to students as often as they typically do. It is crucial that students still get this throughout the learning process, and that is where you come in.

Find the positives! Congratulate them on the little things. Do what you can to make them smile and feel good about even the smallest achievements. It encourages them to continue learning and wanting to be interactive with the process.

Establish Goals With Distance Learning

This is more important now than ever. Establishing goals gives children timeframes and deadlines for them to work toward and look forward to. This will allow them to gauge themselves on what exactly they need to do to get where they need to be. Setting goals and establishing milestones will help them to continue moving forward in what could be a very stagnant situation.

Don’t let distance learning and the hardships that come with it get the best of your kids. Try to keep students motivated during distance learning by allowing them to make those connections, providing positive and meaningful feedback, and giving them goals to work toward and reach. These areas will only improve the overall attitude of your at-home classroom!
