Car Repairs You Shouldn’t Try To Do Yourself

There are plenty of easy DIY car repairs that you can do yourself, from changing your oil to replacing lightbulbs. However, some car repairs can be too dangerous or complicated for you if you’re not an experienced mechanic. There are some of the car repairs you shouldn’t try to do yourself.

Transmission Repairs

The sheer weight of a transmission is the first reason not to attempt to repair it on your own, at least not without serious help. Even with help, the transmission is one of the most complicated parts of your car, and just trying to change the fluid can be more convoluted than you might think. It’s best to leave transmission repairs to mechanics instead of attempting them yourself.

Electrical Work

Modern cars are full of complicated wiring and even involve computers, so electrical work is another repair best left to the professionals. The last thing you want to do is mess up a sensor or run the wrong calibration post-repair, making you start all over again.

Exhaust Leaks

Your car’s exhaust system has many pipes, joints, heat shields, rubber hangers, and more that ensure the exhaust gets away from the sparks inside your car and safely outside. That’s why when something like an exhaust bellow fails, you can smell gas or exhaust. Some gaskets in your exhaust system aren’t too difficult to replace yourself if that’s what’s causing the leak, but a mechanic should handle more complicated issues like a break or a hole.

Brake Problems

Brakes are another part of your car that you can technically repair yourself. However, as one of the most important features that keep you and everyone else on the road safe, it may be best to leave brake repairs to professionals. Calipers, rotors, wheel bearings, and brake fluid are all involved, and a mistake with any of those elements can have devastating consequences.

Windshield Cracks

If you think the small crack or chip in your windshield is an easy fix, think again. Trying to repair it yourself can cause the crack or chip to worsen and may result in your entire windshield needing replacement. Windshield replacements are costly, but a professional should always do them since you need specialized tools to get the job done right.

If you’re ever unsure of how to repair your car, seek out a professional mechanic. There are many car repairs you shouldn’t try to do by yourself. Even if you hear about someone else successfully completing a complicated car DIY, that doesn’t mean you should attempt the same. Be safe, and find a mechanic whenever your car needs complicated maintenance.
