How To Give Your Home A Facelift

Home staging doesn’t have to be done by the professionals. When you watch home improvement shows you are often stunned by the transformation of the featured homes. You might even wonder if your home could look the same. The short answer: yes, it can, especially if you follow these tips to give your home a whole new look.

Declutter Your Home

The first thing to do is to clear the clutter. Home stagers usually advice those preparing their homes for sale to take anything non-essential away so that others can imagine how the internal space will look with their own stuff in it. If you’re not planning to move, then you don’t need to get rid of as much, but discarding items you’re hanging on to out of habit will immediately make your space look better.

Next, it’s time to consider paint. If your home has been covered in the same tired colour from loft to basement for the last 20 years, it’s definitely time for a change. There are all sorts of new and exciting paint colours available and new paint styles too. You can use brush effects for a different look or take a shortcut and simply add accent walls in a different colour to each room. It’s a popular decorating technique, but you’ll need to spend a lot of time making sure your colours blend well.

Floors and Tiles

After that, turn your attention to the floors. It’s probably time for a change there, too. Nothing says elegance like a beautiful marble floor, reminiscent of Italian palaces. If you don’t like marble, there are all kinds of other stone finishes available and when the new floor has been laid you can add rugs for additional comfort.

Don’t forget to choose tiles suitable for moisture for bathroom areas. Speaking of tiles, you can also freshen up kitchen backsplashes, then complete the new look with new countertops. Whether you choose granite, marble or slate, stonework countertops are the height of fashion and will help turn your home into a showpiece. Complete the transformation of kitchen and bathroom areas with new sinks, taps and cupboard fronts. And if the budget allows, upgrade your shower and bath to make your daily ablutions a luxurious experience.

Fixtures and Fittings

You wouldn’t think it, but even something as simple as getting new light switches or door handles can make a big difference to the look of a home. And if you also change the light fittings themselves, the change can be amazing. If you’re feeling eco-friendly go for energy saving bulbs or go for the ultra-modern look with the latest halogen fittings.

Once the changes to the house are complete, then it’s a question of giving furniture a facelift. You can do this by sanding and repainting wooden furniture or recovering upholstered furniture. Complete the show home look with suitable artwork and ornaments.

At the end of this process you will have a whole new home – and it won’t cost as much as buying a new property. Perhaps you might even see it featured on a home improvement programme!
