Important Maintenance After Buying a Used Car

Used Car

Buying a used car can be a financially responsible decision to get a safe and reliable vehicle for a fraction of the price of a new one. But it’s a double-edged sword because you cannot know precisely how well that vehicle will hold up over time due to damage from the previous owner. For this reason, you need to know the important maintenance after buying a used car to make sure it’s suitable to drive.

The Filters

After driving off the lot with your used car, you need to check out and replace three different types of filters: the oil filter, the engine’s air filter, and the cabin air filter. You don’t know the last time those were replaced, if ever, and switching those out can mean the difference between your car running for a few months versus a few years.

Your Car’s Health and Your Own

Neglecting to switch out these filters can mean pumping contaminated air into your engine as well as your cabin, affecting both you and your car. These filters can be easily overlooked, but it’s critical to your car’s longevity to get them replaced as soon as possible.

The Fluids

Just like your filters, there are several fluids that you need to keep track of and replace. These fluids include:

  • Engine oil
  • Brake fluid
  • Radiator coolant
  • Transmission fluid

The Tires

Upon initial inspection while at the lot, there can be many imperfections that go overlooked. But after you take the car home, you need to get your tires checked out. Tires put up with a lot of abuse during their time, and an old pair of tires can run the risk of blowing out while you’re driving. If you’re having a difficult time finding any wear and tear, then take your car to the mechanic; they’ll be able to help.

Further Investment

If it’s decided that your car’s current tires are not suitable for driving, you need to consider a brand-new set. While it may be expensive, there are many benefits to purchasing new tires for your car. They offer a greater degree of safety and control while driving and will give you a fresh start with your car.

Act Sooner Rather Than Later

It may seem expensive to service your car right after buying it, but it’s an essential step after buying your used car that you need to take. If you decide to wait too long, you may become complacent and allow your car to fail before you can make the necessary repairs.
