Safety First: Construction Safety

New construction and even renovation sites can be very busy places, with lots of things going on. Electrician, Plumbers, HVAC Technicians, Framers, Drywall Workers, and many more frequent in and out of construction sites. With all of this work and activity, construction sites can be quite dangerous.

Construction Dangers

Dangers on construction sites can be substantially limited however, just as in any place of work. This typically requires adequate managerial oversight in addition to cooperation from all people on-site. An authority that can provide more specific information on comprehensive site safety management is OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Construction Site Safety

Many of the most effective construction site safety practices are simple. These are just a few great practices that increase safety on-site:

  • A periodical safety meeting is always a great idea. This type of meeting, even if fairly short, can be used to refresh safety-mindedness and inform workers of on-site safety regulations.
  • Wet weather awareness includes knowing the extra risks of wet site work including slips, falls, and electrical shock.
  • Area cleanliness keeps everyone safe. Materials and refuse debris should always be stored or removed as appropriately daily.
  • A perimeter fence or barrier helps control flow of traffic in and out of the site. This helps in person identification, omission of those not belonging on site, and enhanced organization and control of traffic flow.
  • Keep all work areas well lit. This is a critical, yet often overlooked safety aspect.

Safety Practices

Good safety practices also equate to reliable and safe tools and equipment being used at all times.

  • Mobile lighting devices are a great option for versatile and movable on-site lighting sources.
  • Ladders should always be free of cracks or damage to feet, steps, or supports.
  • Electrical Cords should be free of damage or substantial wear. Cord damage can quickly create electrical shock risks.
  • Ramps, walkways, and scaffolding should be free of damage or excessive wear.
  • Appropriate safety apparel and clothing should be worn at all times. Rules should be in place regarding use of gear such as steel-toed boots, safety glasses, and hard hats.
  • Heavy equipment such as generators or lifts should be operated only with certifications of inspection. In addition, flammable materials and fuels should always be stored separately from these devices.

There certainly are multitudes of reasons why a safe job-site is beneficial to everyone. Less injury, more production, company credibility, and insurability are just a few safety dependent benefits. These are some basic helping guidelines in promoting a safety-conscious construction site, and the purpose of this article is to give some basic information on site safety. Organizations such as OSHA and your local Codes and Compliance Office can really provide the most comprehensive information, needed for the serious site worker or manager. Be safe, and good luck!
