Your Freshman Year: Staying Safe at School

drinkingThe college party scene has taken a dangerous turn in recent years with the increased rate of binge drinking among teens. As party goers try to achieve a greater and longer high, teens are turning to energy drinks as a way to prolong that rush. Emergency rooms have seen a significant increase in young adults today, and the culprit behind this rise is alcohol. Students are going beyond a reasonable amount of alcohol by consuming energy drinks. What this does is to feed your craving, so you can party harder and longer.

The excessive drinking can also lead to intoxicated sex. Having unprotected “blackout sex” is extremely dangerous and promotes memory loss. In the morning you wake up without any regrets of what you did the night before. Unfortunately, this can come at a price with STDs, unwanted pregnancies, HIV and depression. Given alternative options such as pool parties with friends, teens were just as happy to binge on large quantities of good food, games and cool music.

Make Good Choices
Just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you have to act without thought or care. You’re in charge of your health, safety and happiness, and you need to ensure that you make the right decisions. This could include eating right, being responsible when drinking and practicing safe sex.

Drinking and Driving
College drinking is rampant on most campuses, especially during the first year. Unfortunately, imbibing can lead to other dangerous substances such as drugs and unprotected sex. If you’re heading to a college bar or campus party, make sure you arrive with a full stomach. This prevents you from becoming intoxicated too quickly.

You should also make sure to have an alternate mode of transportation set up before you head out for the night. This could include a designated driver, cab or calling a friend who hasn’t been drinking to pick you up. You should also never get into a car with someone who has been drinking. In addition to injuring themselves, they could cause harm to passengers and innocent victims on the roadway. Visit sites like Evan Levow to educate yourself about the consequences of drinking and driving. Walking home can be just as harmful also, especially if you’re highly intoxicated.

There have been too many instances in recent years where an inebriated student has stumbled home from a bar only to end up dead. In some cases they fell into a lake or river, while others may have fallen and hit their head.

Travel Safety
Traveling around campus isn’t without hazards, and you need to be alert to any dangers. Try to walk in groups, especially late at night. If you’re in your dorm or apartment, you need to lock your door. Keep your cellphone charged and with you at all times, so you can alert a friend or the police if you encounter anything dangerous. If you’re going on a date, you should alert a buddy of your whereabouts and who you will be going out with. When you get in for the night, shoot them a text to let them know that you have gotten back safely.

College can be a memorable and exciting time in a young adult’s life. With a little maturity, making wise decisions and drinking responsibly, you can ensure a safe and happy experience.
