The 5 best bars and restaurants in Bushwick, New York

Bushwick was once considered a dangerous, industrial neighborhood but in recent years it has become one of the best destinations in Brooklyn for good food, great people and cheap drinks. While my own love for the multi-cultural neighborhood makes me wary of sharing, some places in this neighborhood are just too good to keep a secret. Its large Latin population and plethora of tortilla factories as well as its emerging hipster scene make it a melting pot of amazing flavors and aesthetics. Here are just a few of my favorite spots to check out the next time you venture east on the L train.

Momo Sushi Shack

Just steps from the Morgan stop this little hole in the wall features long communal tables and an open kitchen. The passionate chef is more than likely to stop by your table to offer suggestions and explanations as you peruse a menu featuring sushi “bombs,” like a role but larger and minus the seaweed, and their famous “Pork Betty.” Great service, great atmosphere and great, creative food make this little unmarked and windowless restaurant on Bogart Street a must for Bushwick newcomers.

Mazelle

This recent addition to the neighborhood opened its doors on Wyckoff Avenue in November and quickly worked its way into the hearts of local residents. Owner Yury Maze is a common fixture at the bar, making everyone feel welcome as they enjoy happy hour specials and explore his Russian influenced menu. The staff makes pickled beets, cabbage, onions and asparagus in house as well as infusing their own whiskey, vodka and tequila. Whether you are in the mood for a good beer, good conversation or a great meal, Mazella will quickly become a home away from home.

Roberta’s

While it may not serve traditional New York style pizza, Roberta’s does whip up a tasty Neapolitan, brick oven pie that features only the freshest ingredients. Come early; as waits for this Bushwick hot spot can be several hours long but the atmosphere and the food make this understandably one of the neighborhood’s key dining destinations and well worth the long lines.

Tortilleria Mexicanas Tres Harmanos

It doesn’t get any fresher when it comes to the tortillas served up at Tres Hermanos. This tortilla factory produces thousands of perfect corn tortillas a day and serves them up fresh to customer’s right on the manufacturing floor. The tacos are perfection but the quesadillas are also well worth the stop at this Starr Street location.

North East Kingdom

Where to start? From the wine list to the candles, the amazing food to the service it is no wonder that North East Kingdom tops everyone’s “Best of Bushwick” list. Their menu is based on seasonally available ingredients and features local farms, butchers, foragers and their own organic garden. Words cannot describe the quality of their dishes and I swear that their hamburger, with Vermont cheddar, tobacco onion and mushroom duxelles is life changing. You will really just have to head down to Bushwick and check it out for yourself!
