Top Tips for Keeping Your Fireplace Clean

Fireplace Clean

A fireplace makes a lovely focal point in any room, so you want to make sure you keep it clean and presentable. But soot and smoke residue can be difficult to clean and prevent, so here are some of the top tips for keeping your fireplace clean.

Clear Out the Firebox

To maintain a clean fireplace, get into the habit of cleaning it out after every use. Collect the ashes, charcoal, and soot from inside the firebox once they have completely cooled and dispose of them carefully and safely. If you want your fireplace to look spotless, you can scrub the darkened areas with vinegar and warm water using an old T-shirt or cheap towel. Scrub the areas inside and around your firebox until you’re happy with the results.

Schedule a Chimney Cleaning

Cleaning your chimney regularly is an important fireplace safety tip, and it will also keep your fireplace and the surrounding area cleaner. If you don’t clear out your chimney regularly, soot and debris from the smoke can build up and cause a blockage. This prevents the smoke from escaping out your chimney and sends it back into your fireplace and home. This is dangerous, and it can lead to soot and smoke stains in your home.

Burn the Right Wood

Choose the wood you burn in your indoor fireplace carefully, as not all firewood is created equal. You want to choose hardwoods that have very little moisture and that are thoroughly dry. Using wet or damp wood in your fireplace will produce more smoke, which can billow out into your home, coating your hearth, walls, and furniture in a smoky smell. If your fireplace is getting smoky, try shutting the doors and turning on the fan to circulate the air and smoke up the chimney.

Don’t let your fireplace become a black hole full of soot and ashes. Use these top tips for keeping your fireplace clean to preserve your beautiful fireplace and keep it looking great as the focal point of your room.
